Environment
When Man first began to build, he watched Nature's performance and followed it. His ways rested easily in the environment because the environment was his control and reference. He lacked the power to do otherwise. His materials came from his surroundings — the plants and animals, the rock and dirt. He converted the materials into his tools and he learned:

the vernacular of his materials (originating in the place of its occurrence)

the strength of wood
the shapes of clay
the cleavage of stone
the water shedding of thatch (rushes)
the insulation of straw
that the environment shaped humans' dwellings and their lives.

With their simple technology this association remained harmonious.
